“I am forever amazed when I watch my hand place a color- and something ethereal emerges from the pavement.’
Inspired by the Impressionists and the Expressionists, Alice loves to discover color relationships and the effects on the viewer's understanding of how we see, and the way it moves the viewer’s emotions. Because of this, many of the pastels she uses are hand made, as it is difficult to obtain her color combination with store bought sticks.
Alice's father was her greatest art critic who diligently encouraged talent, yet he was never one to hold back on pointing out areas that needed reworking.
"My greatest inheritance from him? He instilled in me the truth that each person has been imprinted with a creative force that needs to be communicated. It should not lie dormant. I believe our creativity is part of our life force - it needs to be exercised regularly! Whether 2 dimensional, 3 dimensional or through our audio senses, Each of us has something that touches another-to encourage the world around us."
Her work is in private collections in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Not only has Alice presented solo shows, her ceramics, paintings, serigraphs, etchings, and pen and inks have been displayed in juried shows, taking home top awards.
Ms. Crittenden worked for 6 years in advertising firms, first as a graphic artist, progressing to Art Director for a Ventura California advertising agency, and on to co-owner of graphic design agency in Oxnard, CA. She retired from the agency when her daughter was born.
She is currently pursuing her murals and portraitures from her home studio (when she is not traveling the world painting the street at chalk festivals.)
